Book Blurb from Goodreads

Imagine that your husband has two other wives. You’ve never met the other wives. None of you know each other, and because of this unconventional arrangement, you can see your husband only one day a week. But you love him so much you don’t care. Or at least that’s what you’ve told yourself.

But one day, while you’re doing laundry, you find a scrap of paper in his pocket—an appointment reminder for a woman named Hannah, and you just know it’s another of the wives.

You thought you were fine with your arrangement, but you can’t help yourself: you track her down, and, under false pretenses, you strike up a friendship. Hannah has no idea who you really are. Then, Hannah starts showing up to your coffee dates with telltale bruises, and you realize she’s being abused by her husband. Who, of course, is also your husband. But you’ve never known him to be violent, ever.

Who exactly is your husband, and how far would you go to find the truth? Would you risk your own life?

And who is his mysterious third wife?

My Review

The book is about:

The Wives tells the story of “Thursday”, with the premise of “What would you feel if you are sharing your husband with his two other wives?”. Told through the emotionally charged point of view of Thursday, The Wives offer a gripping tale that is hard to put down because you would definitely want to find out what happens next.

What drew me in:

Though I have not read any book written by Tarryn Fisher before, The Wives has been featured in many recommendation lists on mystery/thrillers. I checked it out and the blurb got me hooked. I was looking for something dark and unpredictable — this book gave me that.

Characters & connections:

The main character and the narrator her is Thursday, as that is her schedule for her day with her husband Seth. She was very intriguing, and being privy to her thoughts was both exciting and terrifying for me. I didn’t know what to expect and I didn’t know what to beliver. Her POV made it really hard for me not to feel for her and it made me even more eager to find out what happens next.

The other characters in the story, including her husband, Seth, were great additions in setting the tone of this book. But, as I am not willing to splurge too much on what this book is about, I wouldn’t dwell too much on the supporting characters.

Everything I liked:

The best part about this book, for me, was the writing style combined with the pacing. I liked how this felt like a real thriller because of how it makes me not want to stop reading just so I can see how everything will turn out the end. The first half of the book really entices the reader and draws you in, the latter part is one big chaotic mess – plot twist after twist, which might not appeal to some readers, but it was fine by me.

Overall thoughts:

In its totality, I enjoyed reading The Wives. It was definitely an adventure that made my heart pound due to nerves and my brain pound because of the actual clusterfuck way the story unfolded. I had one plot point that I am questioning the need for — the story could’ve taken a different route instead of this particular one. But, other than that, this book was a good impression from Tarryn Fisher and it made me interested to try out a book of hers in the future.
