One high school girl’s comedic examination of her dating past as told by the friends, family, and boys who were involved!
Avery Dennis is a high school senior and one of the most popular girls in her class. But a majorly public breakup with the guy she’s been dating causes some disastrous waves. It is right before prom and Avery no longer has the perfect date. She runs the prom committee, how could she not show up with somebody?
Post-breakup, Avery gets to thinking about all of the guys that she has ever dated. How come none of those relationships ever worked out? Could it be her fault? Avery decides to investigate. In history class she’s learning about this method of record-keeping called “oral history” and she has a report due. So Avery decides to go directly to the source. Avery tracks down all of the guys she’s ever dated, and uses that information, along with thoughts from her friends, family, and teachers, to compile a total account of her dating history.
Avery discovers some surprises about herself and the guys she’s spent time with — just in time for prom night!

The book is about:
It’s Not Me, It’s You tells the story of high school popular girl Avery in the format of her Oral History project. She recently broke up with this guy a few weeks before prom and she has never ever been single. So, she wants to analyze her dating history and why these relationships never work. For best results, she decides on actually asking her exes for their thoughts on the matter — and the adventure begins!
What drew me in:
I picked up this book while I was idly going through reads on Scribd. I was looking for something cute and light.. and this read was definitely cute and light!
Characters & connections:
This book is filled with so many characters and it is hard to go through each one. But, Avery, of course, is the superstar and she made sure that the spotlight was on her. The connection was there.. I felt like she was a friend. Especially in this format, the way that she adds Editor’s Note to clear out some things is hilarious.
Everything I liked:
The best thing about this book is its unique format. And if you want to highlight this, the perfect way to do it is through listening to the audio book! It is a full cast recording and was really told like Avery’s history project would. It felt like listening to a podcast of some sort. You should definitely use this format when reading the book!
My thoughts on how it wrapped up:
The book is quite short, at 288 pages, and its format can be read as quite a breeze. The pacing was just right, in my opinion, but the ending was a little predictable. Despite that, though, I still had a lot of fun.
In its totality, It’s Not Me, It’s You was a very entertaining read. It is perfect for early YA readers and it is also a good break for adults (like me haha) that are looking for something clean and light, somewhat an escape to ‘serious’ and ‘heavy’ adult reads.
