My Top 12 Books of 2019 (and my 2019 Reading Journey)

Happy New Year, (mood) readers!

Before I go ahead and begin my reading journey for 2020, I would like to look back on the amazing adventure 2019 has become. I started this year just planning to use Goodreads to track my reads and read as I go. But I ended this year trying to juggle a blog, Bookstagram, Facebook Page, and Bookish Twitter! I am also very thankful for the opportunities given to me like reviewing for Netgalley, Edelweiss, and taking part in Book Tours!

Words are not enough to express how happy I am with the warm welcome of the bookish community. I am so excited to see what 2020 has in store for me!

Without further ado, here are my top 12 reads – one per month – for 2019.

“I’m going to kill a man. I’m going to steal the light from his eyes. I want to watch it go out. You aren’t supposed to answer violence with more violence but sometimes I think violence is the only answer.”

“Whether or not the couple ends up together at the end of a book doesn’t determine whether that book has a happy ending or not. As long as the two people end up happy, it doesn’t really matter if they end up happy together.

“Some families are lucky enough to never experience a single tragedy. But then there are those families that seem to have tragedies waiting on the back burner. What can go wrong, goes wrong. And then gets worse.”

April – Honorable Mentions: What If It’s Us? by Becky Albertalli & Adam Silvera // Josh & Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating by Christina Lauren

“No matter who you choose to go down the road with, you’re gonna get hurt. That’s just the nature of caring about someone. No matter who you love, they will break your heart along the way.”

May – Honorable Mentions: If I Was Your Girl by Meredith Russo // The Overdue Life of Amy Byler by Kelly Harms // Lying Next to Me by Gregg Olsen

“There’s a Japanese phrase that I like: koi no yokan. It doesn’t mean love at first sight. It’s closer to love at second sight. It’s the feeling when you meet someone that you’re going to fall in love with them. Maybe you don’t love them right away, but it’s inevitable that you will.”

“That was when I decided that all the ghost stories got it wrong: evil isn’t a spirit or a monster or a ghost. It lives inside regular people, and it doesn’t know the difference between night and day.”

“Thinking about history makes me wonder how I’ll fit into it one day, I guess. And you too. I kinda wish people still wrote like that. History, huh? Bet we could make some.”

“And I know the past isn’t a mirror image of the future, but it’s a reflection of what can be; and when your first love breaks your heart, the shards of that can draw blood for a long, long time.”

“I admit to myself that I am a heroin user, while also updating in my mind what that actually means. I am not a wasted person. I am not prowling the streets. I am not an addict. I am a girl spinning her locker combination. I am a girl who got a B on her math test. I am a girl who has two holes on the inside of her arm, but they do not tell the whole story of me.”

November – Honorable Mention: Made for You by Anyta Sunday

Betrayal has a funny way of turning your world upside-down. As familiar as I had already been with it by that point, it still amazed me how far I could stretch that moment of denial. The thought of what had been—of what could yet be—persisted. Perhaps it is not the same for most people. Perhaps, when you love less, it is easier not to let the emptiness become a cavern from which you could no longer see the sun.”

December – Honorable Mention: American Panda by Gloria Chao

    1. I wasn’t actually sure about what I’d do, so I thought a monthly top read would be enough. Maybe I’ll try something different for 2020! Thank you so much for your support. Hope your 2020 Reading adventure will be epic! xx
