Mini review written a few minutes after finishing the book.
So, When is not the book I expected this to be. Based on the blurb of the book, I thought the “deathdate” element is just a mere prompt to a young adult romance. Well, I was wrong.
What caught my attention on this book is the special skill of Maddie. She can see deathdates.. and only that. I was curious on how the author would play this out.
When is a well-written mystery that is not too much of a serious crime novel. The reader is kept on the mindset of how emotional the main character is and how she sees everything.. so you tend to avoid guessing what happens next.
The book touches on these topics:
– Death in the family
– Teachers/School Authorities Neglect and/or Prejudice
– Mother/Daughter relationship
I guess the only weird think about this book is that little teaser of a romance. For me, it felt disconnected to the whole plot and was just a little pinch for a better ending. The story would have survived without it.
Heroine: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ * Brave girl.
Hero: ⭐⭐ * Basically non-existent. I consider her uncle, Donny, my book bf here. 😉
Storyline: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ * Loved the pacing.
Romance: ⭐⭐ * Just little crushes.
Thrill/Excitement: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ * Loved the plot twist.
I definitely recommend for fans of young adult contemporary mystery! 😊
