Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli [22/57 * 2018]

Leah on the Offbeat (Creekwood, #2)Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Review originally published on Goodreads – August 14, 2018.

“So, this is happening,” she says. “I think so.”She exhales. “Wow.”“Is that a happy wow or a holy shit wow?”“It’s both. It’s holy shit, I’m so happy.”

Holy shit wow. That was what I felt when I first started reading this book. Becky Albertalli gives the perfect young adult voice. She did great with Simon and she did great with Leah.

It’s great that Leah was given her own story. I remember that I watched the film first before I read Simon’s book and there in the film was where I first felt an Abby/Leah connection.

I have to admit I was addicted with the first half of this book. I found myself relating so much to Leah. I loved Leah’s thoughts, especially since I am plus sized, too.

I also believe that gender is a social construct. Many parts of the LGBTQ+ spectrum has always been miscontrued by society. I have some bisexual friends who always struggle with people’s misunderstanding of what bisexuality actually is.

Unfortunately, some parts of this book made me want to pull my hairs out. Leah is so damn stubborn and clueless and insensitive, maybe? It takes her too long to understand other people’s feelings.

I have to say that I definitely loved Simon VS more, compared to this one. Maybe because Simon is an adorable goofball and Leah is still a work in progress. Overall, a good read. Worth the time. 😅

🌻 Blurb:⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The blurb for this one is a win. A short description of Leah. And the struggles she faced. Obvs pick up worthy.
🌻 Heroine:⭐⭐⭐⭐
Leah is a flawed heroine. Very angsty. Very awkward. But that’s what you love about her. She never sees her talent and her potential and sometimes I want to smack her in the head so she’ll come to senses. 😂
🌻 Support Characters:⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I love Simon, Nick, Abby and the whole gang. It’s amazing to be with them again, here. I’m going to miss this bunch, for sure.
🌻 Writing Style:⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Becky Albertalli has found her perfect voice for young adult reads. She makes it easy to read. Her character profiles are out of the box. I would love to read more of her books.
🌻 Character Development:⭐⭐⭐
Leah took so long to resolve things. I was so frustrated, it was so crazy.
🌻 Romance:⭐⭐⭐
This is a super slow burn. Say hello to a whole lot of pining. But the ending, as expected, is super duper cute.
🌻 Pacing:⭐⭐⭐
A quick one. But… It felt like it was dragging, at times, for me.
🌻 Ending:⭐⭐⭐⭐
A fluffball. As expected.
🌻 Page Turner:⭐⭐⭐⭐
By making me feel things, I definitely turned the pages so quick for this one.
🌻 Book Cover:⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
100% perfect. You don’t normally get plus size teen girls on covers. And she looks so cool and collected with a DGAF attitude on the cover. I love it so much.

☁ FINAL VERDICT: 3.7/5 rounded off to ⭐⭐⭐⭐! ☁
